Sequence of Play

Setup:
- Determine who will play first
- Players shuffle their draw decks
- Players draw for high card
- Each player draws a card
- Highest revealed card draw value wins
- Repeat if
- both reveal identical value
- neither reveals drawn card
- Winner decides who will play the first card
- Establish the environment
- Person playing first chooses and plays a SCULLY card
- Opponent chooses and plays a MULDER card
- First person chooses and plays an X-FILES card
- Opponent will take the first turn of the first round
- Start of period
- Players move their discards back to their draw decks
- Players shuffle their draw decks, placing them face down
- Players draw full hands, concealing from opponent
- Rounds
- One player takes the first turn
- For the first turn of a game, it is the person who did not play the X-FILES card
- For other rounds, it is the person who did play the last card in the preceding round
- The first card played must be a Case or Incident.
- If the player has a card they can play legally, they must play it.
- If the player does not have a card they can play, they must pass.
- If both players pass (neither has a legal play), they both discard two cards, and it is the first’s turn again.
- Speculative: Alternate rule, shuffle entire hand into remains of draw deck, draw new hand
- After the first card of a round, players alternate turns, playing a Following card or passing
- The round ends, and is scored, when
- Someone plays a Conclusion card
- Both players pass in succession
- Turns
- At the start of their turn, the player draws cards to fill their hand
- On their turn, a player must play a Case, Incident, Following, or Conclusion card, or pass
- A player cannot pass if they have a card they can legally play in the round
- After playing a card to the table for the round, the player may play an Action card.
- End of period
- The period ends at the end of the round in which
- If the game is not yet over, players may exchange cards between their draw decks and sideboards
- After exchanging, the number of cards in the sideboard must be the same as it was before exchanging
- Cards still in play (on the table) cannot be exchanged
- Your opponent may request to count the cards in your sideboard before and after the exchange
- You are not required to show the faces of the cards in your sideboard to your opponent
- End of game
- The game ends at the end of the third period
- The winner is the player with the highest score at the end of the game
- The game can end in a tie
